This remarkable story of the first twenty-one years of the internationally known Chichester Festival Theatre is told by the founder in a way that will hold your interest to the end.

There are many fascinating anecdotes of meetings with famous actors, actresses and world renowned theatre personalities. He tells of the successes and difficulties the theatre’s directors experienced during their various reigns.

The prides and prejudices of the audiences and the drama critics are all here. He also explains why the ‘thrust’ stage has such a dramatic impact on the audiences drawing them back year after year.

'...there is no question at all that in getting this theatre built he performed a miracle...'

Lord Olivier

The Miracle Theatre will intrigue all who read it – how someone unconnected in any way with the theatre world created a theatre in his spare time and at a time when most people are thinking of retiring.

The Author – Leslie Evershed-Martin, founder of the Chichester Festival Theatre in 1961, had lived in Chichester since 1932, where he served on the City Council for many years and was twice Mayor. In 1967 he was awarded the O.B.E. and in 1982 he was granted the honorary freedom of the City of Chichester.
