2011: Singin' in the Rain

The summer musical had become a staple favourite of CFT audiences, but the 2011 season was to produce one of its greatest and longest-lasting hits. Singin' in the Rain, a musical based on the iconic MGM film, was directed by Artistic Director Jonathan Church and starred world-class ballet dancer Adam Cooper.

With the prowess of Cooper and cast, dazzling set by Simon Higlett - complete with lamppost - and joyous numbers, theatregoers were treated to a memorable summer. Audiences in the front rows were even given waterproof macs to keep off the splashes, to much excitement. Critics were just as positive - 'pure joy' wrote The Telegraph.

The production transferred to London's West End, followed by a sell-out UK tour, with Cooper reprising his role. In 2021, the production was revived, again with Cooper, at Sadler's Wells and toured again in 2022 - over a decade after its debut at CFT.
