News Story

Did you know that Chichester Festival Theatre is home to so much more than the shows on our stages? We’re a hive of activity year-round, working with young people and adults across the community. And this year is a pretty special one for us, as we’re celebrating 40 years of our Youth Theatre!

A group of young performers rehearse in a studio. The wooden floor has been marked out with different coloured tape so it looks a bit like a gymnasium. In the centre, a performer stands with arms outstretched as though balancing on a tightrope. The other performers gather around them in a semi-circle, looking on with curiosity and amazement. It looks fun and exciting.

We know that young people today are growing up with limited creative opportunities in and out of school. But being creative is so important for building confidence and learning transferrable skills. That’s where youth theatre comes in! Every week we run 42 sessions exploring drama, singing, stagecraft, and technical skills for young people aged 5 – 25, at CFT and across seven locations in West Sussex and Hampshire. Participants receive the very best training, whether they’re pursuing a career in the industry or taking the transferrable skills with them whatever path they choose.

A young performer sits onstage in front of a tree, surrounded by charming, colourful bird puppets: a swan, an owl, a parakeet, a jackdaw and a gull. She looks at the swan with a loving smile. She wears a light brown cotton apron, striped blue and cream skirt, a floral white blouse and a denim waistcoat with hair tied up in a scarf.
