News Story
Whilst Redlands plays on the Festival Theatre stage, we're taking over the foyer with a rockin' exhibition. The Court of Public Opinion takes a closer look at the infamous trial of Mick Jagger and Keith Richards (a Witterings local!) which took place at Chichester Magistrates Court in 1967, and how it sparked an era-defining cultural debate in Britain.
The exhibition includes mosaic walls featuring handmade vinyl record covers, made by local community groups, organisations and partners we have worked with this year, alongside classic Stones albums. Their designs reflect their responses to the Rolling Stones’ Redlands bust in Chichester and the themes in our production. The designs were made using sustainable materials like recycled vinyl covers.
The groups who have helped contribute to the mosaics include:
- Pallant House Gallery Community Programme
- West Dean College
- JAM café/AC Chichester
- Sage House Dementia Hub
- Chichester CCDT Yoof Club
- The Apuldram Centre
- Aldingbourne Trust
- The Novium Museum
- Chichester Centre (NHS Sussex Partnership Foundation Trust)
- Chichester Open Studios
- Emsworth Art Trail
- Helter Skelter Records
- Havana Bar
- CFT Volunteers and Staff
Here's what some of the groups have enjoyed most about being part of the project:
It was magical to see so many of our customers' faces light up talking about the music and fashion from their teenage years
Sage House (Dementia Hub in Tangmere)
It’s been great to see the young people channel their creativity into art for the Redlands exhibition, they loved learning about the upcoming theatre production
Chichester Community Development Trust (CCDT)
It was the beginning of press intervention and public reaction influencing the outcome of a trial. Interesting to think of Chichester, a sleepy little market town at the time, hosting a scandalous trial that got international coverage!
Pallant House Community Programme
As lifelong fans of The Rolling Stones & Marianne Faithfull we were delighted to be asked to contribute to this project
Helter Skelter Records
Court of Public Opinion will run alongside Redlands from Friday 20 September – Friday 18 October.
