News Story

One of our generous supporters, Anne, proudly supported emerging playwright Nathan Queeley-Dennis, whose debut play Bullring Techno Makeout Jamz is coming to the Minerva for just three days from 21 - 23 November. Anne shares why she thinks Chichester audiences will love the show and why it's so important to her to support young, emerging talent and new writing.

Why is it important to you to support new work and emerging playwrights?

There is so much hidden talent in the UK that has yet to come to the attention of theatre-going audiences. Many fine plays are written but never performed, and all for the want of often quite modest financial support. New writers are essential to feed our keen appetite for entertainment - and if they are to emerge, they need our support before they become famous.

And why do you think it’s important for us to stage this work at CFT?

The Chichester audience is sophisticated and diverse in its tastes, as shown by the enthusiasm with which it has greeted this year’s productions, from The Caretaker to The Cat and the Canary, and Oliver! to The Other Boleyn Girl. It welcomes fresh approaches, is open to new takes on old themes and embraces the rich wealth of excellence on the stages at Chichester. Bullring Techno Makeout Jamz performed to great critical acclaim at the Edinburgh Fringe and has charmed new audiences around the UK. Now it's Chichester's turn!

What drew you to supporting Nathan and Bullring Techno Makeout Jamz?

As talent spotters go, my experience of [the producing company] Paines Plough is that they are the very best. You only need to look at the long list of successful actors and playwrights who have come through their tutelage in the last 50 years to realise that they have an admirable knack of working with the future stars of British theatre. I read the script and immediately wanted to support Nathan in his debut at Edinburgh. The play is a joy.

What do you think Chichester audiences will love about the show?

I have yet to see it performed and I’m so looking forward to sharing the experience with as many people as possible, especially if they've never even thought to come to the theatre before. If you relate to youthfulness - yours, that of your children, your grandchildren perhaps - and want to experience that glorious combination of energy, naiveté, hope, fun and sheer joy of wanting to make something of life, this is for you!
