News Story

At Chichester Festival Theatre, we are dedicated to promoting a sustainable future. The Theatre Green Book is a collective initiative to make theatre more sustainably.

Historically, most of the set, costume and props used in a show have been bought new or made from scratch. Once the run has finished, they’re often disposed of, due to cost and storage limitations. But the Theatre Green Book is on hand to support theatres to change this! It’s a set of tools and guidelines to minimise the environmental impact of making theatre by reusing or recycling materials, then making sure they have a future life long after the curtain has come down. Last year, we worked with Theatre Green Book, alongside a small group of theatres from across the country, to trial and develop the Theatre Green Book Version 2.

In Festival 2024, we were proud to achieve Theatre Green Book Basic standards on four of the five Minerva Theatre productions, plus Redlands in the Festival Theatre. Read the news story to find out what we learnt about the Green Book from each show.

Our ultimate goal is to achieve the Theatre Green Book Advanced Standard with our shows and our buildings and operations. We aim to lead by example and inspire others in the industry to join us on this journey. We will continue working with other theatres to share knowledge, resources, and best practices, as we know how important it is to approach this together.
